McConnaughay spotlights everyday hero, Scott Corbin, Owner of The Jank Guitar Store

This week, Senator McConnaughay spotlights Scott Corbin, who is the owner of The Jank Guitar Store located in St. Charles. In addition to owning the store, Corbin and is a professional studio guitarist and teacher.

A St. Charles native, Corbin returned to St. Charles, which is now his “home base.” The Jank Guitar Store, named after the “jank” style of music, which is a guitar-driven pop, has been opened just over two years, and places a special emphasis on providing guitar lessons.

Looking to engage area youth, Corbin recently launched a creative contest for Tri-Cities students, giving them a chance to flex their music muscle, think creatively and potentially win a large cash prize. Students are charged with taking a song called “The Road” by Casely and The Jank and turning it into their own creation.

“Basically, the idea behind the contest is it’s a competition for creative talent for the local youth,” Corbin said. “It’s about creativity and interpretation. Local students get to compete on behalf of themselves, their school and their city.”

The contest is open to youth ages 10 to 19 who may perform the song with a guitar, other instruments, a capella, or even using a form of dance. Video submissions are due by August 25 and the winner will be announced December 15.

The intention is for the winning student to use the winnings for educational purposes. However, Corbin says the winner’s school and the surrounding community will benefit as well.

“We wanted to be able to contribute. In addition, the student’s school wins $2,000 for its music program, and the city receives $2,000, as well,” Corbin said.

The cost of the contest is $3 that covers registration and the rights to access the music. Instructions and online registration can be found at www.thejankguitarstore.com/the-road-contest.

“Mr. Corbin understands how important creativity and the arts are to not only our kids, but musical arts enrich our community and our lives,” said Senator McConnaughay. “I commend his efforts to engage young people, but to also impact the region in such a positive and imaginative way.”

McConnaughay is pleased to recognize Scott Corbin for all he has done to give back to St. Charles and the surrounding region.
