Senator McConnaughay recognizes Her Story Theater as ‘Human Trafficking Hero’
This week, Senator McConnaughay recognizes Her Story Theater as her “Human Trafficking Hero” recipient. Her Story Theater uses art to effect social change, and expose the world of domestic sex trafficking.
“There are many methods of combating human trafficking, but Her Story Theater is one of the most unique,” said Senator Mcconnaughay. “Through the use of live theater performances, Her Story Theater raises awareness about human trafficking.”
Her Story Theater is a grassroots professional theater company, whose volunteers and professional artists offer their time and talent to raise awareness about sex trafficking, homelessness and violence, using live theater performances, customized events, lectures, and workshops. Through their outreach efforts, the organizations seeks to promote greater public understanding about these complex issues.
“In our brief history, Her Story Theater, through their productions, events, lectures and workshops has raised awareness with over ten thousand adults and over six thousand youths,” said Artistic Director for Her Story Theater, Mary Bonnett. “We know this is a drop in a sea of human tragedy, compared to the need of people knowing about the crisis and doing something to end it. Our job continues, we invite others to join us.”
Since 2012, Her Story Theater, led by Artistic Director Mary Bonnett, has focused on interviewing hundreds of people involved with sex trafficking in the Chicagoland area.
The organization is currently working on its fourth production relating to sex trafficking. MONGERS, is a study of men engaged in the online buying of humans for sexual purposes, and is focused on how what they view as a ‘hobby’ becomes the victim’s horror—and perpetuates this dehumanizing crime.
For each production, performances are accompanied by a post-show discussion with an expert in the relevant field to engage and further educate the audience. The productions also allow for fundraising opportunities to benefit various service organizations that fight against trafficking.
Customized events are also an important initiative of Her Story Theater. To further engage front line responders, the Court Side event was created, which includes a reception, performance and workshop designed for judges and lawyers working with trafficked victims.
Senator McConnaughay acknowledges Her Story Theater for raising social awareness about sex trafficking through their artistic endeavors. More information on Her Story Theater can be found online at www.HerStoryTheater.org.
