Community Spotlight: Jim Frazier of Lake in the Hills
This week, Senator McConnaughay spotlights Jim Frazier of Lake in the Hills, and the Gold Star 500, a cycling event that honors the service of 34 Illinois National Guard members who have given their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.
One of those service members is Jim's 24-year-old-son Jake, who was killed during an ambush in Afghanistan in March 2003. The Frazier Family lived near St. Charles at the time, and Jim remembers the outpouring of support from that community after his family's tragic loss. Jim now lives in a different community and works with fellow Gold Star families as a support coordinator for the U.S. Army's Survivor Outreach Services program.
On September 20, 34 veterans started the Gold Star 500 ride from Cairo in southern Illinois to St. Charles, the hometown of Jake Frazier. This four-day, 500-mile journey takes the bicycle riders through many of the communities where the 34 fallen heroes lived.
"Jim knows how incredibly difficult it is to deal with the loss of a child in military action, and is now working with other families who have also suffered such loss," Sen. McConnaughay said. "This is a story about endurance, reaching out, and people and communities who care."
Jim was featured in a news article in the Daily Herald. Highlights of the Gold Star 500 ride can been seen on https://www.facebook.com/Goldstar500/.
